In the end the name that he sees on the list first is Jo's, the woman who helped after Ephemera shot him. And she's able to give him the name of an actual healer, who Wash contacts next -- and he makes house calls. Good. He gives his address and hangs up, looking back at Kyna. ]

See? You don't have to go anywhere.

[She shoots him a grateful smile.]

Yeah, well. I can't believe I had to bully you into a healing -- that shit's amazing.

[ It won't be long before there's a knock on the door. ]

[evocation]

You didn't have to bully me.

[Hey, guess who's going to try to get up to answer the door?]

[hardwearing]

[ Oh my god Kyna just stay in bed. She's probably gonna have to lie back down for the medic anyway... but fine. Wash lets her tag along as he opens the door.

The person in the hall isn't quite what Wash was expecting. Jo had said 'he' and the voice on the phone had more or less matched that, but if Wash were to guess on his own he would have pegged Pell for female at first glance. He's pretty enough, with dark hair hanging to his waist, and barely taller than Kyna.

He steps aside to let the guy in, still peering at him curiously. ]

[pellameno]

It's no trouble.

[ He should probably be more careful about house calls right now, but he isn't on the hit list so. It seemed like an acceptable risk. Pell shifts his medical bag a little on his shoulder and steps inside, looking from Wash to Kyna. ]

Are you the patient, then?

[evocation]

[Wow, this guy is pretty. Kyna wiggles her fingers in a half wave.]

That's me. How is this gonna work?

[pellameno]

Usually it helps if people tell me what's wrong.

[evocation]

Um... broken ribs? Probably. They hurt, anyway.

[pellameno]

[ Pell blinks, looking between Kyna and Wash again. There's no way that's a coincidence. Then it clicks -- Washington was the name of one of those space soliders, too, he's been here before. Well over a year ago now, but Pell remembers. He'd just never seen any of them besides Ephemera without armor.

There's probably nothing to worry about. Maine had never hurt him, and York was friendly enough. Still, Pell's not going to mention he just took care of Ephemera. ]

Okay... is there somewhere you can lie down?

[evocation]

[Kyna frowns at the look on Pell's face, tilting her head.]

Uh... Sure.

[She gestures back towards Wash's bedroom, then starts to lead the way, still moving carefully.]

Over here.

[pellameno]

[ It's nothing! Nothing at all! La la la.

He forces a smile and follows Kyna, but the first thing he notices in the room is Wash's armor on the dresser. Yup.

It'll be fine, he'll just keep quiet. For now he sets down his bag and gestures to the bed. ]

I'll have to take the bandage off.

[evocation]

Okay.

[He's jumpy and she doesn't know why, but whatever. Kyna pulls off her shirt awkwardly and sits down on the bed, trying and failing not to wince as she does.]

So how do you do this, anyway?

[pellameno]

[ He shifts forward to unwrap her bandage, hands steady and careful. ]

It's an application of will. Mostly I just have to want something enough.

[evocation]

Wait, want something enough? So you can do anything? You don't need to learn spells?

[pellameno]

No spells, no magic words. Just me. I guess hypothetically, we can do anything. But my kind is still young. Still learning our abilities.

[ He gets the bandage off and settles a hand on Kyna's shoulder, leeching away her pain so she can move easier. ]

Lie back.

[evocation]

[Ohhh, nice. Suddenly, Kyna can breathe normally. She does as he asks.]

Your kind? What does that mean?

[pellameno]

[ He's prodding at her ribs now, hoping her case isn't as bad as Ephemera's. Running his fingers along her torso to sense the breaks. Any pain she feels at the touch is muted to a dull ache right now. ]

I'm not human.

[evocation]

[Kyna makes a face at the sensation, but doesn't complain. This is how it usually feels. She can deal with this.]

Yeah, I know. Me neither. Well, half, but... Are you saying no one else can do magic where you're from?

[pellameno]

I'm saying we all can. We're all capable of it, anyway.

The pain's going to come back now, I can't really heal and ease it at the same time.

[evocation]

No, I know, I mean—

[She meant his kind is the only race that can do it, but then he says the pain's about to come back and she stares at him.]

Wait, what? You can't?

[pellameno]

I mean. I'll try, but splitting my focus like that isn't easy.

[evocation]

No, it's fine. Just do it.

[She sighs a little dramatically. This might suck.]

[pellameno]

Alright.

[ He lets go of her shoulder and the pain returns, but only as bad as it was before. His touch settling on her ribs is gentle enough that nothing's added, nothing's made worse. Everything's in the right place already so there's only warmth and a strange tingling sensation, as he fuses bone back together. ]

[evocation]

[Not bad. Not as bad as she was expecting, at least. It's pretty much just like getting healed by Bell or Panna, and she watches him while he works, curiosity plain on her face.]

What else can you do?
