[ He passes her shirt over and stands up, glancing at Wash. ]

[Kyna pulls the shirt back on, and this time, nothing hurts. It's pretty awesome.]

Trust me, he's probably not even going to let me tie my own shoes.

[She's kidding. Wash isn't that bad.]

[ Wash watches Kyna dress, approving of the way she doesn't wince this time. How she's sitting up and doesn't seem to be in any pain. ]

I think you can take over that duty again.

[She shoots a smile at Pell.]

Yeah, thanks. That was awesome.

[hardwearing]

I'll walk you out.

[ He does just that, thanking the healer again before returning to Kyna in the bedroom. His whole manner is different now that she's healed -- shoulders looser, some of the tension gone from his face. ]

Ready to take on the world again?

[Even if Kyna isn't always great at reading people, his relief is blatantly obvious. She didn't realize just how stressed out he really was until this moment.]

Does this mean I can't trick you into spoiling me anymore?

That depends on what kind of spoiling you want.

[ No it doesn't. He'll do anything. ]

[She reaches for him, looping her arms around his waist and settling her head against his chest.]

So I can't ask you to, like... slay a dragon for me or something?

[hardwearing]

[ His arms come up around her easily, one hand burying itself into her hair. It's nice to not have to treat her like she's glass. ]

What did the dragon ever do to you?

[Kyna lets out a quiet, contented sigh, smoothing a hand down his spine.]

Dragons suck. Do you want a list?

[hardwearing]

No, I believe you. But it'd probably just eat me, I don't know how to slay a dragon.

[evocation]

You want to know a secret? We don't know how to do half the shit we get paid to do.

[hardwearing]

Do you at least get to do recon?

[evocation]

[She makes a face, though he might not be able to see it with the way she's leaning against him.]

Not really.

[Her fingers catch the bottom hem of his shirt and she starts to toy with it absently.]

There's this woman, Panna? She's the one that gives assigns us jobs, but she doesn't really tell us much about the crap we might run into. It's kind of shitty.

[hardwearing]

I hate improvising.

[ Kyna's mentioned Panna before, and Wash doesn't think he'd like her much. ]

But you've always pulled through, right?

[evocation]

Yeah. I mean, we've totally almost died because she didn't know or didn't care that we were going to run into something fucked up.

[She shrugs.]

They don't pay us enough.

[hardwearing]

Ask for more. Or will you just lose the work?

[evocation]

I have. I don't know. Panna's Harlan's girlfriend, so I can't get too shitty with her, you know?

[hardwearing]

Wouldn't that be more incentive for her to give you details? Wanting him safe?

[evocation]

You'd think so, right? But she's... weird. She makes me uncomfortable, but she's a necromancer, so. You know.

[hardwearing]

I don't know, actually.

[evocation]

Oh, uh...

[She looks up at him, or sort of does with her cheek still resting against him.]

Necromancers can bring people back to life. I mean, that's not always bad, and some necromancy spells are pretty awesome, but some of them are... Kind of fucked up. Like, resurrecting the dead and using them as servants, or stealing people's souls as they die. Shit like that.

[hardwearing]

...would she actually do that kind of thing with it? Stealing souls.

[evocation]

No. Probably not.

[But then, considering some of the things Panna has done, Kyna can't rule that out completely.]

Jesus. Maybe I should just quit.
