It's like... Holding onto something slippery, you know? If you focus on how the magic feels, it makes it easier not to lose it, or for the spell not to dissipate when you're still trying to figure out how to cast it. Does that make sense?
[He quiet while she thinks about it, watching her expression for any hints that might not come through just in her words, but the explanation does make enough sense on its own. He likens it mentally to piano; when he's learning something new he has to really think about which keys to press and how to move his hands to do so, but once he's gotten in some practice he's more listening to the music, with the expectation that he's already hitting the right keys without thinking about it.
