Okay. So, uh, cantrips are the easiest spells you can learn. They're what you start with. Shocking Grasp is an evocation cantrip, but you'll only be able to shock someone if you touch them directly. The more powerful stuff requires a focus, and if you get that far I'll have to walk you through this whole ritual to make one.

And a focus is, what, something that helps you channel magic? Like a wand or something? [He's guessing, but it's a confident guess. 'Focus' is pretty straightforward.]
Does Shocking Grasp work on stuff that isn't, uh, other people? [Can he charge his phone with it???]

Uh... I use a lot of lightning and fire spells. Like, offensively, I mean. But there are also spells that like, lock doors, or fuck with electronics, or let you teleport. I use that one a lot. And Shocking Grasp to charge my phone or whatever.
