[It takes Kyna longer than she would have liked to learn plane shift, and longer still to master it to the point that no one (read: her brother) thinks she'll accident shift to some terrible hell dimension.

And she manages it, pretty perfectly, actually, although an exhausted girl with pointed ears just appearing in a military base with no warning doesn't get her the warmest welcome.]

Hey, chill, I'm just looking for Wash.

[God, all of them are in armor. It's kind of nuts.]

[ Now, Kimball sounds actively wary. Because... no? She was personally responsible for the Reds and Blues' privacy and only told one person where they were. She might not know exactly what they've been up to since Dylan Andrews found them, but it's extremely unlikely that Kyna could have met Wash in the past two weeks. Especially since she's most definitely a civilian. But one thing at a time. ]

How did you know he was here?

Ugh, God. Look, nothing I'm going to tell you is going to make any sense, and you're going to think I'm lying, so can you just go ask him already?

[Unless he doesn't remember her at all, in which case she has much, much bigger issues.]

[ The women share another look, and Kimball seems to be getting understandably frustrated with these antics, so Grey takes over. And she's just going to spit it out. ]

We can't, sweetie. Agent Washington was brought to Chorus two days ago severely injured, and has been in the ICU post-op. He's still heavily sedated. I'm sure you can understand why General Kimball is concerned?

[ Kimball is concerned, and nods slightly to confirm that. ]

This already doesn't make any sense, so you might as well explain. Or we're going to have to hold you indefinitely.

[Kyna is fairly certain her heart stops. Suddenly she doesn't give a shit about whether or not they try to hold her indefinitely.]

He's what? Is he okay? What happened?

[ That alarm seems genuine, but Kimball has been fooled by good actors before. She lifts a hand to indicate that Kyna needs to stay calm. ]

I don't have a report of the incident yet -- we haven't been able to contact the Reds and Blues. He's stable, Doctor Grey here is our best surgeon and oversaw the procedure herself. But if you want to see him we need to be sure you're not a threat.

[Unfortunately, Kimball is going to discover that "calm" isn't something Kyna is great at. She covers her face with her hands, breathing shaky.]

Oh, God. What does stable mean? Like, fine or not going to die in the next two seconds?

[ That's... very convincing, but still. Kimball glances to Emily, gives her a slight nod to explain. ]

Stable means he's not getting worse right now. I repaired the physical trauma and his vitals are surprisingly strong but his airway was compromised for an extended period. There may be neurological damage from the reduced oxygen but he's a tough cookie. I've seen him bounce back from worse than a pesky bullet before. We just have to wait for him to wake up, now.

[Neurological damage. It's honest, but it's certainly not comforting. She doesn't want to start crying in front of these two, so she tries to choke back her tears and take slow, even breaths instead. It only half works, and she rakes her hands through her hair in frustration.]

You're not going to believe me. Can't you just... Handcuff me or something and let me see him? Please?

Your friend is going to be just fine, sweetie, but seeing as a lot of people are trying to kill him and you literally just popped in from nowhere -- still fascinating by the way -- we're going to have to go ahead and keep his safety the priority.

[ Kimball does speak up again, then, because while Grey is right she isn't the most diplomatic. ]

We can't verify your identity or intentions, and you're not giving us anything to believe.

Okay. Okay.

[Her voice breaks a little and she swallows.]

I'm from Earth. We both got... Pulled somewhere and trapped there for a while. Imprisoned, basically.

[ That'd be the first Kimball's heard of it, and considering she was personally responsible for securing the Reds and Blues' privacy during their retirement... no, she doesn't really believe that. But there's a lot that doesn't add up here so she just nods, waiting for Kyna to continue. ]

It's, um...

[Kyna sighs. She was going to keep it vague, but fuck it.]

It's called plane shifting where I'm from. We weren't actually in the same... I mean. We went to a different universe. Time usually gets fucked up when you do that, so when we got back to where we were supposed to be, no one knew we were gone. But before we left he gave me his dog tags and I promised I'd figure out how to get here.

That's--

[ Kimball doesn't want to say impossible, but it sure sounds it. But Emily cuts her off in excitement, chattering a nonstop stream of questions about multiverse theory and quantum mechanics relating to slipspace. It's pretty clear Kimball has no understanding of what she's talking about, either. ]

Emily. Emily.

[There's that deer in the headlights expression again. But thanks, Emily? Kyna just points at her.]

Um... Yeah. That.

[ Kimball takes a moment to process this, once Emily stops chattering. Just because something has never been proven doesn't mean it isn't possible, she supposes. She would likely never understand the science behind it, so her priority is establishing whether or not Kyna is telling the truth, and if she's a threat to Wash. Her gut tells her the woman is legitimate, but... ]

At least this explains why you don't exist here. I'm inclined to believe you, I'm just concerned there's no one who can vouch for you to assure Wash's safety.

Just... Send a guard with me or something. Please?

[ It's a risk. Kimball hesitates, but with Kyna out of armor and so visibly so upset... she makes the call and just hopes it's the right one. ]

Alright.

[ She signals to one of the guards that came in with her. ]

Open the cell, secure her. I'll arrange an escort back to the hospital.

[Kyna frowns, eyes flicking to the guards, but she doesn't protest. Whatever securing means, she'll go along with it.]

[ The soldier has cuffs, wide bands that secure Kyna's wrists directly to one another. That seems to be about it, though. They don't bother to blindfold her or anything so she's free to observe the base as she's led out of it and into a jeep, Doctor Grey and the guard taking seats on either side of her.

New Armonia is clearly still under construction, but the hospital they pull up to is finished. The lettering above the entrance declares it General Donald Doyle Memorial Hospital, and Doctor Grey and the guard lead Kyna inside to another elevator. ]

Have you ever been in an ICU before, sweetie?

[Kyna is antsy the entire way there, but when they actually reach the hospital, it turns into pure and obvious anxiety. She shakes her head at Emily's question, her response quiet.]

Um, no.

[ That's what she thought, and as the elevator rises Kyna just seems to get more anxious. A little primer might be in order before she actually lets the woman on the floor. ]

Okay! Soooo, it's gonna look a little scary. Lots of tubes and wires, y'know? All the beeping machines. And he's intubated from the surgery and because of where the injury is, so even if he does wake up soon he won't be able to speak to you. But one step at a time.

[It's not exactly a comforting warning. Kyna is fidgeting, twisting and untwisting her fingers together.]

But you said he's going to be okay, right?

Absolutely. That man has nine lives, he shouldn't have survived the transport but here he is!

[ The elevator opens, and Doctor Grey guides Kyna forward with a hand on her shoulder. ]

Are you ready?

[Kyna's mouth twists. Emily says it so cheerfully, but all Kyna can think about is the fact that Wash doesn't deserve any of this. He should be safe somewhere, not fighting a war for the millionth time and almost dying, but she just nods.]

[ It's impossible to read Emily behind her visor, but her hand tightens a little on Kyna's shoulder before she leads the other woman into the ICU, the doors opening for them automatically. The guard escorting them stays two steps behind, politely giving them space but still doing his job.

The area is an open floor plan, beds set up along both walls separated by curtain dividers. The staff here isn't in armor, and their glances at Kyna and her escort are curious but no one approaches. Not yet, at least. Emily pulls back the curtain on the bed closest to the nurse's station on the left -- obviously they're keeping a very close eye on Wash.

He's unconscious, just as Kyna was told. Whether it's sleep, a coma, or just the sedation is impossible to tell at a glance, but at least whatever it is, he's peaceful. Emily wasn't wrong about it looking scary, either. There are wires running from leads on his chest for the monitors, an IV in his arm and heavy bandaging around his neck, besides the intubation tube down his throat. He's pale and there are dark smudges under his eyes, though at least from what she can see exposed by his gown's short sleeves there aren't any other injuries. Emily glances over her shoulder towards the nurse's station and calls for a report on Wash, while Kyna takes the sight in. ]
