[ Wash has been out for awhile, scavenging and gathering water... he's starting to wonder if the city supplies are depleted enough to turn to their MRE stash, and how he could handle dispersing that throughout the population, making sure they're used properly and not hogged. It'll take a post, probably, and he's not the most personable figure but then who is around here, really? Either way he's done hauling things for now, and heads back up to his and Kyna's room.
He comes in the door and nudges it closed again behind him, starting to tug off his jacket before he realizes the scene before him. Kyna and Lando are home, but neither are approaching him. No, the giant dog is curled up at Kyna's feet as she... oh no. Why is she crying? Wash freezes with one arm still in a sleeve, rather comically, like a deer in headlights. What does he do? Wait, no, did he do something?
When he speaks he sounds a strange mix of wary and concerned, and he hasn't moved. Meaning he's still standing there with his jacket half-on as he addresses this instead. ]
[Kyna was kind of hoping Wash wouldn't be home for a while. She didn't want to him to see her crying, mostly because... Well, he has a tendency to panic. Like this. Later she'll look back and find the way he's frozen funny, but right now, all she can really do is sniffle and wipe her cheeks.]
Rome's gone.
[That's explanation enough, right? Nico and Tucker have just left, too, and while they were a blow, at least she's mostly certain she'll see them again.]
[ It's enough to unfreeze him. He slips his jacket the rest of the way off and comes to sit in front of her, reaching for her hands with one of his, the other coming up to wipe her cheeks for her. This on the heels of Nico and Tucker, but being from a terrible situation back home that Kyna wanted to save him from.... yeah. Wash gets it, as much as he wishes he didn't. ]
Yeah... I didn't say anything because and maybe she'd come back with the new arrivals or something, but she didn't. El disappeared a few weeks ago.
[ He tilts his head towards the dresser where his armor is set out, and Kyna may notice that beside it is a little walkie talkie. The one Eleven used to carry. ]
I don't know. When I went back home, everything I brought here came with me, and I don't even know how I'd be able to tell what he had from home, anyway.

Kyna...? What's wrong?

I know what you're feeling.

Wait, why? Did someone else leave?

I'm sorry. You could have told me.
no subject
No, I think I was hoping she'd come back. I'm telling you now that she didn't.
[ He looks back at Kyna, then, eyes bright. ]
We need to save Maine. I can't -- if he just disappears, too, I don't... we haven't even figured out how to tell him.

[She lets out a shaky breath.]
I didn't even have anything of Rome's. I can't even try to find him if we go home.

[ Trying to be helpful is probably just upsetting her worse. ]
I know I'm not helping, I just wish I could fix it.
no subject
You always help.
[And she knows he always wants to fix it, even if there's no obvious solution.]
We'll figure out something with Maine, just like with Lance. I promise.
no subject
Okay.
[ Unless they just vanish. Or... maybe there's more to it. ]
Do you have a backup plan for Lance?
no subject
[Kyna is not exactly an expert at those.]
