CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Kyna Midha
Age: 26
Canon: Original

World Description: Kyna is from a DND campaign, so a lot of those mechanics apply to her world. There are multiple humanoid races (elves, gnomes, orcs, etc.) and magic and monsters are very real and prevalant. Kyna's campaign was a modern day urban fantasy one set in New York City, though, so there are no fictional countries or geography. There are multiple gods worshipped in the setting, but none of them have been definitively confirmed. Because there are so many sources of magic (a wizard's obsessive studying vs. a sorcerer's innate ability, for example) mages that claim their abilities come straight from the gods aren't exactly able to prove it. Demons and spirits are definitely running around causing trouble, too.

Because magic and monsters have such an effect on day to day life, most local police agencies have a sort of special unit for dealing specifically with magic, but guilds fill the gaps for whoever is unwilling to ask the cops for help, sort of like magical PIs. Some of those guilds are super sketchy.

History: Kyna is a half-elf wizard. Her father was an elf and obsessed with magic, while her mother was a very non-magical human woman. Kyna also has an older brother, Nico, who she grew up very close to. Their father ditched the family to play magical Indiana Jones when Kyna was around ten, and Kyna spent most of her childhood and adolescence getting into trouble and throwing herself into honing her own magical abilities. She graduated high school only because her brother made her promise she would, and then spent her time aimlessly jumping from crappy job to crappy job.

When she was 23, she joined a local guild and started adventuring with a small group. The people involved varied, but the most important were Tucker, a shapeshifting rogue, and Harlan, a non-shapeshifting sorcerer. Over their adventures together, Kyna learned to trust and open up to them, and the three became super close. After finding out that the guild they were working for was super sketchy and didn't really care if they lived or died, they ditched it and started their own, which they called Counterspell.

CRAU: Kyna showed up in [community profile] hadriel as a messy 24 year old, and she left as a... slightly less messy 26 year old.

For the most part, Tucker and Harlan kickstarted Kyna's journal to becoming more emotionally mature, but the characters she met in Hadriel carried her along quite a bit, too. Kyna was completely torn from her usual coping mechanisms and support system, minus Harlan, and so she was forced to deal with the awfulness of the setting essentially as a blank slate. A lot of the events also forced her to open up whether she wanted to or not.

Two of the biggest influences on Kyna in game were Lance Sweets and Agent Washington. Both of them became grounding forces for her in different ways, and both of them helped her mature and become more secure in her relationships. Throughout the course of the game, she was also forced to work with and rely on a much wider variety of people than she ever had at home in a lot of really terrible situations, from shapeshifting robots waging war on the city to losing her magic.

Death: Kyna was killed fighting the Null in their final assault on Hadriel.

What are your plans for this character in-game? One of the main things I'm interested in doing is forcing Kyna to deal with a horror setting without magic as a crutch. I'm most interested personally in unraveling the mystery of the town, but IC Kyna will likely be more focused on protecting the people she becomes close to and figuring out a way to come back to life (as unlikely as that might be).

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? The survival/horror aspect! Kyna's never really been in a setting where she couldn't find the necessities easily, and she's never had to deal with psychological trauma or survival without her magic longterm. Since she's so reliant on her spells for pretty much everything, there's going to be a steep learning curve and she'll take a hefty hit to her self-worth.

How does your character generally get along with other people? Kyna is very social in a shallow sense. She'll jump into conversations with new people and enjoys teasing and goading them, but it takes her longer to open up in a deeper sense. She tends to be very ride or die, letting questionable things slide from the people she cares about, and she's very touchy-feely with those she likes.

She can also be very impulsive, quick to argue, and isn't great at deescalating situations. This can be bad and she's gotten her ass kicked for it more than once. When she dislikes someone, it's almost impossible for her to resist picking fights with them. On the flipside, though, when she respects and trusts someone, she has a tendency to defer to their advice more often than not, and often assumes their methods are better than hers.

In a team setting, she can be more prickly. She's definitely not a leader, but getting her to follow someone in charge requires a certain amount of respect. She's likely to flat out call someone's plan stupid or do her own thing if she doesn't like them or approve of them.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? Kyna won't be doing great. Before the Null attacked Hadriel, she had plans to bring some of her friends home with her, friends who knew they'd die if they went back to their own worlds. She'll be dealing with the fact that she'll never see the people back home she cares about again while simultaneously feeling like the deaths of her Hadriel CR are her fault. She'll likely swing back and forth between trying to figure out a magic based way of getting out of Beacon and being aggressively depressed. She also might go through a phase of becoming even more impulsive and reckless since she's dead already anyway and all.

Personality: In broad strokes, Kyna is stubborn, overconfident in her abilities, impulsive, and quick to jump into trouble. She craves connections with other people, even if she struggles with building and maintaining those connections. She can be immature and avoidant if she runs into a situation or emotion she's overwhelmed by, and in some ways sort of considers herself invincible. Once Kyna befriends someone, she's fiercely loyal and supportive, sometimes to the point of overlooking flaws or mistakes. She's also pretty blunt and speaks her mind without thinking of consequences. Basically, she's bad at keeping her mouth shut, and isn't always the most eloquent. It's rare that she stays serious in a conversation for long, and will often resort to joking when she's uncomfortable. She's high energy and always needs to be doing something. Kyna also has a vindictive streak, and can be very vengeful and even cruel when someone has hurt her or someone she cares about.

Items:
- Clothes (a leather jacket, t-shirt, shorts, etc.)
- Her Healys, which give her a bonus to healing magic
- A set of dog tags from Wash
- A necklace that allows her to cast Prayer of Healing once a day, but it has to be recharged in sunlight, so it's worthless
- Her focus

Skills/Abilities: Kyna is a half-elf wizard and focuses on evocation. A list of her spells is here, and a good portion of them will be pretty useless in this setting, as will her darkvision. More generally, Kyna is a glass cannon. She can do an insane amount of damage with her magic but is tiny and physically weak. In Hadriel, some of her CR taught her basic fighting skills, but she's still not very strong and will default to magic if at all possible. Because Kyna is a half-elf, she can't be put to sleep by magic and it's harder to charm or magically compel her.

In our campaign, wizards needed a focus in order to cast magic. It's basically like a magic wand that allows them to "focus" their magic and essentially connects to their soul. Without a focus, a wizard's magic is much harder to control and more unpredictable. Focuses can be remade, but it's exhausting and a long process.

Flaws/Weaknesses: Kyna is impulsive, reckless, and oftentimes arrogant in her magical ability. Some of this has been tempered during her time in Hadriel, but not nearly enough. She's used to using magic to solve her issues, from grabbing something on a high shelf to killing monsters, and it's become a crutch. As a result, when she loses her magic for any reason, it's like losing a limb to her. She's also incredibly stubborn, and refuses to back down from a challenge even if it's dangerous. The easiest way to get her to do something is to tell her she can't, at which point she'll do everything she can to prove her doubters wrong. Branching off of that, she's pretty easy to manipulate. Kyna is a very emotional person, and tends to make decisions based on her gut, which can be fine but most often is pretty bad. It's rare that she stops and thinks through things, and she often relies on her friends to rein her in. She doesn't really plan or make longterm goals, and is pretty easily swayed when someone she cares about or respects gives her a good argument to change her mind about something.

She's mostly afraid of losing the people she loves, and the big hitters in that category (and the ones she'd have the most visceral reaction to seeing in danger) are Wash, Lance, Harlan, Tucker and Nico. She's also still utterly terrified of losing her magic or being made "useless". For Kyna, her sense of self and confidence is so tied into her magic that she considers it analogous to her self worth, but otherwise being incapacitated or needing to be babysat or taken care of drives her nuts, too.
