It is said the elves from that long ago all wielded powerful magic as naturally as they drew breath. That, and they were immortal. But I am far from a good representation of elves today, much less so long ago. You would be better off asking a Dalish elf.
Not that you should, even if you could. It is hardly worth putting up with the smug sense of superiority.
They live nomadic lives away from the rest of society, especially humans — having refused to live in elven alienages in their cities, and even stay away from other Dalish clans. They spend their days living on the borders of human lands trying to reclaim lost elven history, waiting for the time to come when they can become what they once were. Or so they believe.
They seem to have little in common with most elves.
Ah...the elves who submitted to human rule were moved into walled off parts of human cities long ago. They're slums, honestly. There is no law that says the elves cannot live and mingle with the humans, but often times it is dangerous for them to do so, and thus the alienage is the "safer" alternative. I have only seen one for myself, and it was crammed into the poorest part of town.

Just humans?
[That sounds awful, he thinks, with a human in his lap.]
Is there no other race?

[Does that make sense? She's not sure.]
Where I'm from, elves are like... folklore. They're supposed to be super gorgeous and use really powerful magic.
no subject
[He understands insofar as he gets what she's saying, at least, if the nod of his head is any indication. Still, how odd.]
"Super gorgeous".
[He would point out the fact that what she said isn't too far off from what is said to be the elves from ages ago, but. Really.]

I guess that part's true.
no subject
I suppose that's not unlike what is believed to be the elves from ages ago.
[He honestly should have seen that coming.]
no subject
And what makes you different from them?
no subject
Dryly:]
I am far better looking, obviously.
no subject
[She pokes at his side.]
But seriously.

So what makes them different? Besides being assholes.

[And, because she has no tact:]
Your world kind of sounds like it sucks.

Good to know that even ranked among other worlds Thedas is considered to "suck". You will hear no argument from me.

[Let's take a break from talking about how much Thedas sucks ass.]

Ask me a question or something.
