He isn't using the network publicly yet and wouldn't have anything to contribute, but finds that he'd like to talk to her again. She's one of the few people he's spoken to where he wasn't feeling constantly on edge and. Well. He knows he needs to make some friends. He knows he doesn't like who he is when he doesn't have any.

[This is a fun double whammy—one, the fact that they've been avoiding each other and now his message is literally popping up in her brain, and two, the question she hates the most in the entire world. It instantly fills her with dread.]

[Initially, the earthquake is surprising but not horribly distressing; Lance is not exactly used to earthquakes, but he is used to things going wrong, and so he isn't terribly bothered by it. He takes the opportunity to see how other people in the apartment building react, wandering out in the hall to talk to neighbors and use the opportunity to blend in a bit as a new tenant, and taps into the news as it starts to roll in.

[By the time Lance messages her, she's safely outside, huddled with the rest of the group. None of the Displaced died, but there are still a few scientists unaccounted for, and she's not sure how to process that. Honestly, she's in the middle of an adrenaline crash, and so the message notification actually startles her.
But it's... kind of sweet. Maybe it's stupid that she wasn't really expecting Lance to check up on her, but she wasn't.]

Hey, this is your post Antarctica check-in. Think of it like roll call except you're the only one that gets to say, present.
[It doesn't take a psychologist to figure out that Kyna's upset about something, and at first Lance doesn't bring it up since she might want some space; he assumes what happened with the earthquake is catching up to her. But eventually he finds her in the kitchen, and decides to just ask--]

[For all that she's terrible at explaining her feelings (and oh boy, wouldn't the empathy bond be useful there), Kyna is awful at hiding them. She's slamming a cabinet closed as he enters the kitchen, and she makes a face at his question.]

There are pros and cons to everything, and he has to take the time and mental effort to weigh them, and on this particularly pressing one he decides to take a middle ground.
