Oh, so pretty much the same sort of thing as in my world, except the ritual one was to try to prove Slenderman was real.

That didn't work either, for the record.

there are certain types of spirits that take on different forms
sometimes it's something like a popular urban legend, sometimes it's someone you know who died, whatever

Like Slenderman, or a spirit pretending to be Slenderman, or however it works. 'Fictional' monsters that aren't actually fictional in practice for some reason.

there are definitely monsters that people think are just myths that are real, though

there's definitely something that fits most of the stories
black dogs are real too

That's interesting and it makes sense; there's kind of a similar legend in a lot of different places.
