[ And evidently it's not nearly as interesting to him as pirates, either, because something in his bearing sharpens. ]

When you said you were reading about 'em, I thought you meant history, not, uh, Treasure Island.

[She leans forward onto the bar. It's a good thing it's slow tonight.]

I was reading about that Black Sam guy who like, thought he was Robin Hood.

[ Sam supplies it idly, arms crossed lazily against the bar as he leans in just a fraction. ]

Used the skull and crossbones--you picture a Jolly Roger in your mind, it's either his or Calico Jack's. What'd you think of him?

[Her lips quirk up.]

Like, are you testing me to see if I have good pirate opinions?

I seem like the kinda guy who'd do that?

Okay, maybe not.

[But Sam is pretty opinionated.]

I don't know, he seemed pretty awesome. Treated his men well, tried not to hurt anyone?

[ Nah, he totally is. Good thing she passed. ]

[ A shrug. What can you do? Hazard of the job. ]

Yeah, but that was because of a storm, right?

Storm and a sand bar. Bad combination if you don't got a motor--not a great one even if you do.

Yeah, I bet.

[This is nice, actually, just talking like normal after that last conversation they had.]

Do you know how to sail?

If it's a speedboat, sure.

[ Admire his restraint: he managed to answer without a single reference to motorboating. ]

Tall ships like they were using back then, nah.

Do you sail a speedboat? Or do you... drive it?
