[As she asks, a server comes over with their drinks and plops them down. They're candy bright and very fruity.]

[ man, the way his eyes light up at the drinks. ]

You [ he wags a finger at her. ] totally nailed it. I love the fruity ones. They're so good. [ don't mind if he pulls one towards him for a taste. ]

Mmm... [ he taps his fingers on the tabletop. ] Twenty two years.

[Kyna bursts out laughing. She's decided she likes this version of Kai much better. He's cute.]

How old are you now?

[hiyakai]

[ excuse, he's adorable no matter what. ]

Twenty two. [ (: ]

So I get to boss you around.

[Because she's older, she means.]

Is magic a secret in your world?

[hiyakai]

You wish.

[ age is relative. besides, he's actually 46. chronologically. ]

Yeah, it is. Is it in yours?

[evocation]

It was for a long time, but it's gotten... you know, stronger recently. Plus, everyone's got a camera in their pocket now, so it got impossible to keep hiding, you know?

[hiyakai]

Makes sense. Even with memory spells, it's hard to keep under wraps.

[evocation]

Yeah. That.

[She reaches over, trying to steal the orange slice from his drink.]

What kind of magic could you do?

[hiyakai]

[ no way. he moves the drink away from her in the nick of time, wagging his finger at her. ]

All kinds. [ he is like a fountain of magical knowledge at this point. ] Offensive, defensive, elemental, illusionary, you name it.

[evocation]

[She looks briefly disappointed when he pulls the drink away.]

Oooh, Mr. Fancypants over here. You're a regular Gandalf.

I just had a lot of time to study it.

[ like a lot of time. ]

What about you?

[evocation]

Um... Pretty much the same, mostly. Where I'm from we're kind of like... dependent on the magic around us, you know? It's not like we generate it or something, we draw it from the environment and then transform it. Most people can only naturally transform it into one thing. Does that make sense? So if we want to do something else with it, or something really permanent, we have to use a ritual or make a deal with a familiar.

[hiyakai]

So, like a specialty then. You can perform one type of magic, but if you want to branch out, then you need to draw more energy through a ritual or, like you mentioned, a familiar and it requires more concentration.

[evocation]

Yeah, pretty much. But there are some things all of us can do, you know? Like sense other things that are using magic, too.

[hiyakai]

Cool. [ he takes a sip of his drink. ] So, what was your specialty?

[evocation]

Electricity.

[She says it a little wistfully.]

[hiyakai]

Neat. What could you do with it?

[evocation]

Uh... Tons of stuff. You know, charge my phone, weld shit together, sense electrical currents. Zap people.

[hiyakai]

Zap people. [ a wide grin at that. ] You must have had a lot of fun with that one.

[ he looks thoughtful for a moment and then— ] So, what's your power here?

[evocation]

Um... I'm not sure. I can like, phase through things, but sometimes I zap them, too.

[She doesn't get the connection, really.]

[hiyakai]

...with electricity? [ that's sure a vague description, kyna. ]

[evocation]

Uh, yeah. But I can't do it without phasing first. It's weird.

[hiyakai]

How does that work exactly?
