Although I appreciate the offer, there's no point if it's just me.

[He isn't going to take advantage of the invisibility and bail if Kyna's in danger, after all.]

[Kyna crosses her arms stubbornly.]

Lance, are you serious?

Did I sound like I wasn't?

[Stubborn battle is a go.]

Oh my God. I have like a million spells I can use if something attacks me. I can teleport.

Are you planning to use one of them if you do get attacked?

[Because her earlier response to his question was not super convincing, and so he's suspicious as to why she didn't just mention these options then.]

Yeah? Duh.

[Caveat: She'll teleport away once she's sure he's safe. It's fine.]

[Lance narrows his eyes a little, staring intensely, both to read her and also just be purposefully annoying to see if she says anything else.]

[Kyna tries to win this staring contest, but gives up about five seconds in and sticks her tongue out instead.]

Your hair is stupid.

[Lance sighs dramatically at that, but then can't help a small smile anyway.]

Yeah, believe me, I know. But okay, fine, you can cast the spell on me, but only if you promise to retreat too if something happens. Otherwise I'll waste the spell by staying with you.

[So really, no point.]

God, fine.

[She reaches for his arm.]

Just shut up and let me concentrate.

[Lance's smile becomes a little more smug, but he lets her touch his arm and is quiet again as requested.]

[Kyna catches that smug smile and shoots him one last look before she closes her eyes. The spell takes a moment—she has to weave two of them together, focusing more on intent than she might otherwise so that the magic triggers correctly.]

There. All set.

[Lance sees that look and is silently amused with himself until Kyna says she's finished with the spell.]

Okay. So it just turns on instantly if someone attacks me?

[evocation]

Yep. Ta-da. No one's allowed to maim you anymore.

[He's quiet again at that briefly, and his tone is more serious when he responds.]

I'm okay, Kyna, really.

[She was trying to be flippant about that, but now her voice softens a little.]

Yeah, because you got lucky. I just don't want you to get hurt again.

I know, and I appreciate it. I don't exactly want to get hurt again either.

[He's had enough injuries, especially serious ones, for a lifetime. A regular lifetime, even, not a 'die before thirty' lifetime.]

But the same goes for you, and I can't just stand back if you get into trouble, so let's just... Both avoid anything like that.

[Reconnaissance only, right?]

[She nods.]

We'll be careful. The things she summoned aren't what I'm worried about.

[He presumes she means Caedra specifically, which would make sense.]

Is there anything I should know to watch out for?

[Specific powers or magic or whatever that demons have?]

[evocation]

Yeah, um... demons like to poison you. These guys usually use weird spores to do it. The flying ones are more dangerous, and if they screech, it can really fuck you up and throw you off. The ones on the ground are a lot less of a pain in the ass to deal with, but both of them are pretty resistant to fire, electricity and ice. I mean, assuming they're exactly the same as the ones we fought back home.

Wow, that all sounds terrible.

[And also means he's worse than useless, just as he thought, but the plan is to evade and not fight anyway.]

But okay, got it. Let's just try to make sure we keep our distance; if they're around Rage's temple, we might be able to see what's going on even if we stay on this side of the river.

[And actually--]

We might even be able to see something from Spire 2.

[Which is where Lance's apartment is, of course.]

Oh, cool. That's a good plan. Lead the way.

[He brightens a little at the compliment, leading the way as requested. As they walk, he's keeping a cautious watch for any demons--or anything else, really--that might be around, but things are thankfully pretty quiet in this part of the city and so he starts up conversation again.]

I didn't really get a chance to ask you how things went for you during the last event.

[Aside from having to help him, he means.]

Uh... Wash and I both got sick, but it wasn't the worst event ever. Except for you not letting me punch Michael.

[She's mostly kidding. 90% kidding.]
