[She scrubs her hand over her face.]

It's not like killing Caedra will do anything. She'll just come back and want to torture me or something.

Yeah, it's... Probably a good idea to avoid that.

[Although Lance immediately feels kind of guilty for saying it, because--]

I mean, I don't exactly encourage the idea of not taking action and just letting people get away with things simply because they're dangerous, but the situation here is kind of complicated.

[And he really doesn't like that, for a few reasons, but it's the reality of this place.]

[It bothers Kyna, too, but this entire thing is making her uncomfortable in a way it shouldn't. She's dealt with demons before, but ever since what happened to her dad, they've freaked her out, and knowing that she can't actually kill Caedra terrifies her, even if she won't admit it.]

What do you think I should do?

[He considers it for a few moments.]

Do you think you'd be able to stop her, if you chose to? Or would it be a big risk, even without the factor of her coming back?

[Kyna shrugs.]

It's always a risk. Harlan, Tucker and I could take her though, I think, but they don't want anything to do with it.

You don't sound very confident, and without them involved it doesn't seem like a viable option anyway.

[So no point in her being in danger , right?]

Right now the Guard has responded, and this is the entire point of their organization. It's fine to let them handle it for now, unless it becomes apparent that they can't.

Ugh, I hate this.

[She buries her face in her hands for a moment, sighing, and when she continues, her voice is muffled.]

I don't want a bunch of people to go after Caedra and get hurt.

Neither do I, but getting hurt yourself won't help them either.

[Not unless Kyna is really sure she can do something and therefore it's worth trying to intervene.]

Do you want to go assess things, though? Not get involved, necessarily, but see how it's going?

[She peeks at him through her fingers.]

Okay. I guess that's a good idea.

Okay. Nick said they were spotted near Rage's temple, so I guess we should just head that way.

[Carefully.]

[Kyna holds up a hand.]

Can I cast something on you first?

[Lance hesitates at that a moment, unsure, but doesn't reject the idea outright.]

What would it be?

A contingency spell. I can cast greater invisibility so that it'll only trigger if something tries to attack you.

Can you use it on yourself too?

[evocation]

Um... No. I'll be okay. It's fine.

[Obviously!]

Uh-huh.

[He says it incredibly flatly.]

Although I appreciate the offer, there's no point if it's just me.

[He isn't going to take advantage of the invisibility and bail if Kyna's in danger, after all.]

[Kyna crosses her arms stubbornly.]

Lance, are you serious?

Did I sound like I wasn't?

[Stubborn battle is a go.]

Oh my God. I have like a million spells I can use if something attacks me. I can teleport.

Are you planning to use one of them if you do get attacked?

[Because her earlier response to his question was not super convincing, and so he's suspicious as to why she didn't just mention these options then.]

Yeah? Duh.

[Caveat: She'll teleport away once she's sure he's safe. It's fine.]

[Lance narrows his eyes a little, staring intensely, both to read her and also just be purposefully annoying to see if she says anything else.]

[Kyna tries to win this staring contest, but gives up about five seconds in and sticks her tongue out instead.]

[Lance sighs dramatically at that, but then can't help a small smile anyway.]

Yeah, believe me, I know. But okay, fine, you can cast the spell on me, but only if you promise to retreat too if something happens. Otherwise I'll waste the spell by staying with you.

[So really, no point.]

[She reaches for his arm.]
